Triticale and Maize. Yes, We Made Whisky From Those Too

Barley? Of course.

Wheat? Absolutely.

Oats? We've done that too.

But triticale and maize?

Well, why not?

We're rather excited to introduce two more whiskies from Auld Farm Distillery, made from grains we've grown right here at Scotts Gap.

And they're not your everyday whisky grains.

Triticale. Triti-what?

We suspect this one might have a few people scratching their heads.

Triticale (pronounced trit-i-kay-lee) is a cross between wheat and rye.

It's a grain developed to bring together desirable characteristics of both crops, and one we're familiar with as farmers.

But making whisky from it? That's a rather different proposition.

Rye has long had a place in whisky-making, particularly in North America, but triticale is much less familiar to whisky drinkers.

And that's precisely why we wanted to explore it.

What happens when you take a grain that most people have never heard of and give it the opportunity to stand on its own?

We think that's a question worth asking.

Maize. A familiar grain with a different story.

Then there's maize.

You might know it better as corn.

It's the grain most closely associated with bourbon, where it must make up at least 51% of the grain recipe.

But we're not making bourbon.

We're making whisky from maize grown on our own Southland farm.

No need to hide it amongst other grains. We want to discover what maize itself brings to the glass.

Because sometimes the most interesting thing you can do with a familiar crop is look at it in an entirely different way.

Five grains. Five different whiskies.

With barley, oats, wheat, maize and triticale, we're building a collection that reflects the diversity of what we grow.

Five grains, each with its own character.

And rather than trying to make them taste alike, we're interested in celebrating their differences.

That's what excites us most.

As farmers, we've spent years learning how different crops behave in the paddock.

Now we're discovering how differently they behave in a glass.

Come and taste the difference

Our maize and triticale whiskies are the latest additions to the Auld Farm collection.

Both are available in 200ml and 700ml bottles.

If you've ever wondered whether the grain really makes a difference to whisky, we'd love you to explore the range and decide for yourself.

You might just discover a new favourite.

FIVE GRAINS. ONE FARM. FIVE VERY DIFFERENT WHISKIES.
